Thank you for your support of the Structural Engineers Foundation of Washington! Even while still feeling the effects of a global pandemic, SEFW was able to continue supporting its mission through scholarships, education, research, and outreach. Please enjoy this report of accomplishments made possible by donor support. We look forward to what 2022 has in store!
University Scholarships
June 2021
SEFW continues to provide a majority of the funding for the SEAW Scholarship Awards Program. In 2021, two candidates were awarded $10,000 in total funds. The SEAW program has presented $205,500 to 79 structural engineering students since 1985.
Hank Knight, of Spokane, earned a BSCE from UW and started the MSCE program, also at UW.
Miguel Gonzalez, of Puerto Rico, has a BSCE from University of Puerto Rico and is now working toward a PhD in structural engineering and mechanics at UW.
ACE Mentor Program Partner
June 2021
For the first time, SEFW partnered with the ACE Mentor Program of Washington, funding a $5,000 SEFW scholarship for Newport High School grad Jamie Zimmerman, who is planning to study architectural engineering at Cal Poly.
Successful Hybrid Forum on
Sports Venue Renovations
November 2021
SEFW hosted its 11th Fall Forum, "Washington Sports Venues, Then & Now: Evolutions in Design," reaching 250+ people (in 7 states and 4 countries!) in a hybrid event streaming and at Town Hall Seattle. Four speakers showcased multiple statewide sports venues that have been renovated and reimagined over the years, including the newly completed Climate Pledge Arena. The lecture can be seen on Vimeo.
Student Outreach Efforts
February 2021
SEFW supported the ASCE Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition, held virtually in 2021. SEFW continues to support the SEAW Outreach Committee; learn more at their website.
Special Wind Regions Study
SEFW made a second donation of $12,000+ to fully fund a Special Wind Region study to collect Pacific Northwest wind data. The SEAW Wind Engineering Committee reports that initial results from the study were available in late 2021, and the final report is expected in 2022.

First Bequest Received
December 2021
SEFW was honored to receive its first bequest donation, a generous gift from the estate of Richal Smith, a local structural engineer and former member of the SEFW Board. Richal passed away in July 2021, a great loss for the local engineering community. SEFW is organizing a plan to disburse the funds as scholarships.
Board of Directors Changes
December 2021
Craig Roberts of CT Engineering will continue to serve as Chair of SEFW and will be joined by Cale Ash of Degenkolb and Melissa Verwest of Knife River as Vice Chairs. Ted Smith will continue as Secretary/Treasurer. Joining the Board in 2022 are Herb Ahten of Verco Decking and Trevor Lunde of GLY Construction. The full Board listing can be viewed on our website.

The above graphs outline SEFW's breakdown of contributions/income and expenditures for 2021. The Board continues to utilize a separate account, funded 100% by Board donations, to support SEFW-related expenditures not directly related to programs, such as Board retreats or social functions. Individual and corporate donations are used exclusively to support the SEFW mission. Please note, 2021 administrative costs include overhead, fundraising, liability insurance, and one-time fees to redesign the SEFW web site.
