Thank you for your support of the Structural Engineers Foundation of Washington! SEFW celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020 and it was a year like no other! Even through a global pandemic, SEFW was able to continue supporting its mission through scholarships, education, research, and outreach. Please enjoy this report of accomplishments made possible by your support. In the end, it was an award-winning year and we look forward to building on this momentum in 2021!
University Scholarships
June 2020
SEFW continues to provide a majority of the funding for the SEAW Scholarship Awards Program. In 2020, $15,000 was presented to four candidates. In total, the SEAW program has now presented $195,500 to 77 structural engineering students.
Amanda Kalab, of Marysville, earned a BSCE from University of Idaho and has started a MSCE at WSU.
Marcella Li, of Kent, earned a BSCE at UW and is starting a MSCE at Stanford.
Rami Sabra, of Everett, earned both BSCE and MSCE degrees from UW.
Jason Wells, of Olympia, earned both BSCE and MSCE degrees from UW.
Virtual Forum on Bridges
November 2020
Maureen Elenga, local historian, and John Stanton, UW professor, co-presented "Bridging Washington: The History, Structure, and Innovation of Washington Bridges" in a virtual event broadcast to more than 400 people all over the world! It was an incredible night with discussion on the art, design, politics, history, and engineering marvels behind several Washington bridges. The lecture can be seen on Vimeo.
Outreach Efforts Awarded
December 2020
The National Council of Structural Engineers Associations recognized SEAW and SEFW for the exemplary structural engineering outreach work being done in Washington state, specifically including the Forum lecture series. Read more about the 2020 Public Outreach Challenge (including the Press Release announcing the winners).
Student Outreach Efforts
February 2020
Although most outreach events were canceled in 2020, SEFW was fortunate, before the pandemic, to offer support to the SEAW Outreach Committee, the Puget Sound area ASCE Popsicle Stick Competition, and the Mead School District Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition. The SEAW Outreach Committee is eager to do more in 2021; learn more at their website.
Special Wind Study Support
December 2020
At the request of the SEAW Wind Committee, SEFW collected and donated $12,000+ for a Special Wind Region study to collect Pacific Northwest wind data, jointly funded by SEAW and SEA-Oregon. A second donation will be made in 2021 to fully fund the effort.
WSU Study Fully Funded
May 2020
A university-level research project which SEFW supported in 2018, "Anchorage of Headed and Hooked Bars in Masonry," was fully funded and tested more than 100 specimens for anchor pullout this spring. Some additional testing is taking place in early 2021. Washington State University, the Northwest Concrete Masonry Association, and the National Concrete Masonry Association completed the project in partnership, are writing up results, and are considering a second phase of testing.
Board of Directors Changes
December 2020
Craig Roberts of CT Engineering will continue to serve as Chair of SEFW and will be joined by Cale Ash of Degenkolb and Craig Stauffer of PCS Structural Solutions as new Vice Chairs. Ted Smith will continue as Secretary/Treasurer.
Joining the Board in 2021 are Dick Hemmen, formerly of DCI Engineers and now retired, as well as Melissa Verwest of Knife River. The full Board listing can be viewed on our website.

The above graphs outline SEFW's breakdown of contributions/income and expenditures for 2020. Individual and corporate donations are used exclusively for costs associated with the SEFW mission. Because of the pandemic, no funds were expended for "social" functions (which are typically funded by contributions from the Board of Directors).
